He was signed to Twentieth Century Fox at the young age of 20 and began to gain leading roles in films such as “Beneath the 12-Mile Reef,” “Prince Valiant,” and “A Kiss Before Dying,” which earned him critical acclaim. In the 1960s, he formed his own production company with then-wife Natalie Wood and starred in “The War Lover” with Steve McQueen. Wagner took on three roles in the late 1960s and 1970s that made him a bonafide star, including Alexander Mundy in “To Catch a Thief,” Pete Ryan in “Switch,” and Jonathan Hart in “Hart to Hart,” for which he was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards. Natalie Wood’s Mysterious Death
In November 1981, actress Natalie Wood drowned near the yacht Splendour while it was moored near Catalina Island. On board were her husband Robert Wagner, actor Christopher Walken, and the captain of the yacht, Dennis Davern. The Los Angeles County coroner ruled her death an accident by drowning and hypothermia, but the case was reopened in 2011 when Davern publicly stated that he had lied to police during the first investigation.
According to Davern, Wood and Wagner had an argument that evening, and Wagner went into a jealous rage when he saw Wood flirting with Walken. After Wood disappeared, Wagner refused to let Davern turn on the searchlights and notify the authorities. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department named Wagner as a person of interest in the investigation in February 2018, but Wagner has denied any involvement in Wood’s death.
After Wood’s death, Wagner became a stepfather to her daughter Natasha Gregson Wagner. A few months later, he began dating actress Jill St. John, and they married in 1990 after eight years together.

However, the couple never moved into the house, which remained empty for over 12 years.
